Retirement tax rules for Nevada residents (2026 guide)
Nevada levies no personal income tax, so retirement income of every kind is state-tax-free. What retirees notice is a 6.85% state sales tax (8.375% combined in Clark County) and a 3% cap on yearly increases in the property-tax bill on a primary residence.

Income tax
There is no Nevada income tax on wages, Social Security, pensions, IRA or 401(k) withdrawals, or investment income, and no estate or inheritance tax.
The 3% property-tax cap
Nevada's partial abatement limits the year-over-year increase in the property-tax bill on an owner-occupied primary residence to 3%; other residential property gets a cap of up to 8%. You designate one property in the state as your primary residence with the county assessor, so the declaration matters when you buy.
Sales tax
The statewide rate is 6.85% and counties add more — Clark County, home to Las Vegas, is at 8.375%. Groceries and prescription drugs are exempt.
Worked examples
How the 3% cap works
- This year's tax bill on your primary residence: $3,000.
- Values jump 12%. Next year's bill is capped at $3,000 × 1.03 = $3,090.
The bill can grow $90, not $360.
